A lot of people market the idea that you can have a business that makes money while you sleep. And then they show pictures of gorgeous beaches, women with perfect pedicures in fluffy spa robes, or fancy expensive cars.

It’s a very attractive prospect – I mean, who doesn’t want that?

But running a business isn’t all lazing around on the beach.

I also wake up to Paypal notifications – but it doesn’t mean I don’t do any work!

I got a really interesting question the other day — someone asked me how to know if it was too late for her to start a business?

Well, the short answer is: IT’S NOT! I don’t believe it’s ever too late to start a new chapter in your life. Whether you’re 30 or 60, if you’ve got the idea, the drive, and the energy, I say go for it!

The media tends to focus on child geniuses — the kid who starts a billion dollar company from his dorm room, that sort of thing — because it’s interesting and UNUSUAL. Many business owners are using their names for their website addresses and even the name of their business. But many of my clients who are just starting out have a hard time deciding whether to use their own name or a unique brand name for their business.

One of the biggest issues I see that my clients may not even recognise, is the emotional weight of the decision. We’ll talk about how to decide on your own name in a moment, but here’s a quick tip: if your name is available as a url and you are wondering whether or not to buy it stop what you are doing right now. Get your credit card and and buy it immediately. Really, now. I’ll wait here while you do that.
